Code on Social Security, 2020

The Code on Social Security, 2020 (CoSS) came into force on November 21, 2025, by Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India vide Gazette Notification No. 5143 dated 21.11.2025.

Expanded Definition of “Dependant” (Section 2(24)(c) under ESI Act, 1948)
The revised definition now includes two additional categories:

• Widower (previously excluded)

• Grandparent (previously excluded)

Both are now entitled to Dependent Benefits under the scheme.

Expanded Definition of “Family” (Section 2(33)(e) under ESI Act, 1948)
The definition of “family” has been extended to include:

• Father-in-law of a woman employee

• Mother-in-law of a woman employee

Both are now entitled to Medical Benefits under the scheme.
