EPFO has extended the due date for filing the Electronic Challan-cum-Return (ECR) and paying contributions for the September 2026 wage month from 15 October to 31 October 2026. The relief follows the mid-month revision of the EPF wage ceiling, which forced employers to rework September payrolls.
The EPF wage ceiling was raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month vide S.O. 5109(E) dated 17 September 2026, effective the same day. Because the change landed mid-month, September 2026 became a split month for PF computation.
Establishments covered under the Code on Social Security, 2020 had to revise pay-bills, payroll configurations and employee-wise contribution calculations at short notice. EPFO received multiple representations from employers and other stakeholders about the technical, operational and administrative difficulties this created in preparing the September ECR.
EPFO has accepted that these difficulties arise directly from the mid-September change. The extension gives establishments time to complete payroll revisions and resolve technical issues, while still requiring statutory obligations to be me.
The relief is deliberately narrow. Para 6 of the circular makes three points:
It applies only to the ECR and contributions for the September 2026 wage month.
It is not a general extension for any other wage month. October 2026 contributions remain due on the usual date, 15 November 2026.
It does not relax any other obligation under the Act or the Schemes
