The Central Government recently raised the EPF wage ceiling from \u20b915,000 to \u20b925,000 per month<\/strong> (S.O. 5109(E), effective 17 September 2026). Under the old ceiling, many employees were members of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme but were kept out of the Employees’ Pension Scheme, typically because their wages were above \u20b915,000 when they joined. Many of these employees now earn at or below the new ceiling. This notification decides what happens to them.<\/p>\n

A new clause (iii)<\/strong> is added to Paragraph 7(1)<\/strong> of the EPS 2026. It covers an employee who meets all of these conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The effect is that these employees now fall within EPS membership under Paragraph 7(1).<\/p>\n

Effective Date<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The notification is dated 25 September 2026 but takes effect from 17 September 2026<\/strong>, the same date as the wage ceiling increase. This means it applies retrospectively by eight days, so that pension coverage and the higher ceiling start together.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

What Employers Should Do<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Identify affected employees.<\/strong> Look for EPF members who are flagged as non-EPS in payroll and whose wages on 17 September 2026 were at or below \u20b925,000.<\/li>\n
  2. Reconfigure contribution splits.<\/strong> From 17 September 2026, the employer’s share for these employees should be split between EPF and EPS. The treatment for September must be worked out on a split-month basis.<\/li>\n
  3. Update EPFO records.<\/strong> Change the EPS eligibility status of affected members on the Unified Portal so that ECR filings match.<\/li>\n
  4. Document the snapshot.<\/strong> Keep a record of each employee’s wages as of 17 September 2026, because eligibility depends on that date.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
